Your day, stop by stop
Around 04:30 · The dark start
Your PNW Tourism driver collects you from your hotel while the city is still asleep. The Carnival is warm, the lights are low, and nobody expects conversation. The drive out to the desert launch site typically takes under an hour.
The launch field
You arrive to the sound of fans and burners as the crew inflates the envelope — a genuinely theatrical sight in the pre-dawn dark. Our partner operator's pilot runs the safety briefing: how to board, how to stand, how to land. It's short, clear and worth your full attention.
Lift-off before sunrise
The basket leaves the ground so gently that most guests miss the exact moment. Within minutes you're climbing towards 4,000ft with the dunes unrolling below in every direction. Then the sun comes up, and the desert turns from grey to gold in about ninety seconds.
The falcon at altitude
On this flight, a trained falcon is flown alongside the balloon — the UAE's national bird at eye level, at height. It stoops, circles and returns to the falconer's glove in the basket. Even guests who came for the sunrise tend to leave talking about the bird.
The landing
Where you land depends entirely on the wind, which is half the charm. You'll brace as briefed — knees bent, holding on — and the basket settles, sometimes with a hop or two. The crew is already there with the recovery vehicles.
Breakfast in the desert
Breakfast is served on landing, in the open, while the crew packs the envelope away behind you. There's usually a certificate and time for photographs with the balloon. It is a very good hour.
The drive back
Your driver returns you to your hotel typically by mid-morning, which most guests spend asleep in the Carnival. You're back before many hotel guests have surfaced for breakfast. The rest of the day is entirely intact.
Insider tips
- Go to bed absurdly early the night before. The alarm is real, and the flight rewards being awake for it.
- Wear layers you can shed one-handed — you'll be cold at 04:45 and warm by 07:00, and your hands will be busy with a camera.
- Ask the pilot before boarding which side the sunrise will be on, and take a corner spot on that side of the basket.
- Put your phone on a wrist strap and leave anything loose in the car. Four thousand feet is an unforgiving place to fumble.
- Don't plan anything for the afternoon that requires charm. Book a late lunch, nap in the Carnival on the way back, and let the morning be the whole story.
Questions, answered
What happens if the weather is bad?
Wind decides everything, and the pilot's call on the morning is final — as it should be. If our partner operator cancels, we'll help you rebook for another morning of your stay or sort out the alternative with you. Cancellations are for your safety, not their convenience, so take the reschedule with good grace.
Is it frightening, or bad for motion sickness?
Neither, in almost all cases. The balloon moves with the wind, so there's no rocking, no turbulence and no sensation of speed — many guests find it calmer than a lift. The only brisk moment is the landing, which the pilot briefs you for thoroughly.
What should I wear?
Layers. The desert before dawn is genuinely cold, even in warmer months, and by breakfast you'll be shedding everything. Closed flat shoes are essential — the launch and landing fields are sand and scrub — and a cap helps under the burner.
Can children come, and is there an age limit?
Children who can stand unaided and see over the basket edge generally enjoy it enormously, but minimum age and height rules are set by our partner operator, not by us. Tell us your children's ages at booking and we'll confirm eligibility before you pay. Infants cannot fly.
I'm pregnant / have a back or knee injury — can I fly?
The landing requires a braced standing position, so our partner operator excludes pregnant guests and typically anyone with recent back, hip or knee injuries. If you're unsure, ask us before booking and we'll check your situation honestly. There's no benefit to anyone in fudging this at the launch field.
How long are we actually in the air?
Typically around an hour aloft, within a five-hour door-to-door experience — the rest is transfers, briefing, landing and breakfast. Flight time varies a little with wind and landing options. Nobody has ever complained it felt short.
What happens after you book
You get a confirmation straight away, with the reference and everything included in writing.
The evening before, your driver messages you on WhatsApp with the exact pickup time and their name.
On the day they are early, the water is cold, and the plan bends to you. Pay then, or in advance — your call.
