07:00 · The tunnel road east
The modern highway to Khor Fakkan is an attraction in itself — a feat of engineering that punches straight through the Hajar in a series of long tunnels and sweeping viaducts. Your driver-guide times the drive so you hit the mountain section in good light. Each tunnel exit reveals a bigger wall of rock than the last.
09:30 · Al Rafisah Dam
First stop is a green-water reservoir cupped in bare mountains, with a walkway around the shore and a kiosk doing decent coffee. It is a gentle leg-stretch of half an hour or so, and the reflections are best before the breeze gets up. Boats operate here some days; if the idea appeals, ask your guide about it on arrival.

Khor Fakkan's waterfall pours down a rock face beside a full Roman-style amphitheatre — and no, neither was here a few years ago; both are proudly engineered showpieces, and better for being honest about it. The pairing of white colonnades against raw mountain is genuinely photogenic. Twenty unhurried minutes covers it.

Khor Fakkan's beach is a clean white curve on the Gulf of Oman with mountains standing straight up behind it — one of the prettiest urban beaches in the country. This is the long, unstructured heart of the day: swim, shade, walk the sand. The water here is clearer and cooler than the Gulf side.
13:30 · Lunch on the corniche
We eat at a relaxed venue along the waterfront, with the bay and the container cranes sharing the view — Khor Fakkan is a working port and does not pretend otherwise. Note that Sharjah emirate does not license alcohol anywhere, so lunch is soft drinks and fresh juice. The seafood does the heavy lifting.
15:00 · Homeward through the Hajar
The return run gives you the tunnel road all over again with afternoon light on the peaks, and your guide can add a viewpoint stop above the town if the group has energy left. You are typically back in Abu Dhabi around 18:00. The tan and the photographs travel well.

Insider tips

Go midweek — at weekends the beach and the waterfall draw crowds from every emirate, and the corniche parking becomes a sport.
Ask your guide about the cliff-top rest house road above the town — the switchback climb ends at one of the best bay views in the country.
Pack swim things and a towel in a day bag rather than buried in luggage; the beach block arrives quickly.
The dam kiosk and smaller corniche stalls prefer cash for little purchases — carry some small notes alongside your card.

Questions, answered

Is the waterfall real?

It is a real waterfall in the sense that real water genuinely falls — but it is an engineered feature, built as part of Khor Fakkan's recent showpiece developments, and we would rather tell you that upfront. Judged as scenery rather than geology, it works. The amphitheatre beside it is the better photograph anyway.

What is the dress code in Sharjah emirate?

Sharjah is the most conservative emirate, and its public decency guidelines ask everyone to keep shoulders and knees covered in towns and public spaces. Ordinary swimwear is fine on the beach itself — just cover up before wandering to the corniche or the shops. Your guide will keep you right; it is easy to get right.

Can we get a drink with lunch?

No — Sharjah emirate does not license alcohol anywhere, full stop, so no venue on this tour serves it. Lunch runs on fresh juices, karak and very good seafood instead. If a licensed dinner matters to you, we can plan one back in Abu Dhabi after the tour.

Is the swimming safe for children?

The main beach shelves gently and the bay is usually calm in the mornings, which is when we schedule the water time. We choose the swim spot based on conditions on the day, and lifejackets can be arranged if you tell us ages in advance. As on any open beach, children swim under your supervision rather than ours.

How much driving does the day involve?

Around three hours each way from Abu Dhabi, which is why this runs as an eleven-hour day. The consolation is that the final hour is the tunnel-and-viaduct mountain road, which guests consistently rate among the day's highlights. The Carnival's seats and cold water handle the rest.

When is the best time of year for this tour?

October to April is the sweet spot — beach weather without the fierce heat, and clear air over the mountains. In summer the east coast is a touch kinder than the Gulf side but still hot; we shift the beach block earlier and lean on shade and the sea. The tour runs year-round with the pacing adjusted honestly.
