18:45 · Collected before dusk
Your driver-guide picks you up in the Carnival, timed so you reach the jetty with some light still in the sky. Boarding in daylight and sailing into darkness is the whole trick of a dhow evening. The drive is short and unhurried.
19:15 · Stepping aboard
The dhow is a traditional wooden vessel with two decks — enclosed below, open above. Crew show you to your table and a welcome soft drink typically appears. Take a minute on the top deck before you settle in.
19:30 · Casting off along the Corniche
The dhow slips out at walking pace as the Corniche towers light up one by one. This is sheltered harbour water, so the deck barely moves. The city does all the performing.
20:00 · Dinner is served
The buffet opens below deck, typically a mix of Arabic and international dishes with salads, grills and dessert. Go early, go back for seconds, and skip the heroics of one enormous plate. Dietary needs flagged at booking are catered for.
20:45 · Coffee on the upper deck
Take your tea or Arabic coffee upstairs for the return leg. The skyline at this hour — deep blue sky, lit towers, black water — is the picture people come for. The breeze is gentle and, in winter, worth a light layer.
21:15 · Alongside, and home
The dhow comes back to the jetty around two and a half hours after boarding. Your driver is waiting where you left him. The ride back to the hotel is quiet, in the best way.
Insider tips
- Board early and claim the rail seats on the upper deck — they go first and they are the best in the house.
- The skyline photographs best at blue hour, just after sunset, not in full darkness. Have your phone out for the first twenty minutes.
- Eat lightly at lunch. The buffet rewards the prepared.
- When the buffet opens, go promptly and plan a second visit rather than building one tower of a plate.
- Ask the crew which side faces the Corniche on the return leg and drink your coffee on that rail.
Questions, answered
Is there a dress code?
Smart casual is the norm — nobody expects a jacket, and nobody arrives in beachwear. Flat shoes are sensible on a wooden deck. In winter, bring a light layer for the open upper deck.
Is alcohol served on board?
Traditional dhows are generally unlicensed, so soft drinks, juices and tea are the standard offer. In Abu Dhabi only licensed venues serve alcohol. If this matters to your evening, ask us at booking and we will confirm the vessel's status honestly.
Can vegetarians and other diets be catered for?
Yes — the buffet typically includes vegetarian dishes, and the food is halal as standard. Tell us about allergies or stricter requirements when you book so the galley knows in advance. Same-day surprises are harder to solve at sea.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. The water is calm, the decks are railed and the buffet always has something a child will eat. Keep small children seated during boarding and casting off, and note that high chairs cannot be guaranteed.
Will I get seasick?
Almost certainly not. The dhow stays in sheltered water and moves at little more than walking pace, so the motion is closer to a slow train than a boat. Guests prone to motion sickness routinely finish dessert without incident.
What time does the cruise sail?
Evening departures typically board around sunset, with exact timing confirmed with your booking. Winter sunsets come earlier, so the schedule shifts with the season. We time your pickup so you are never rushed at the jetty.
