Your day, stop by stop
The pickup, timed to the tide
Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel; the launch point is typically fifteen to twenty minutes east of downtown. Departure times shift with the tide, because the best channels only open when the water does. We confirm your slot the day before.
Kit and briefing on the shore
Our partner operator fits you with a kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid and a dry bag for your phone. The briefing takes about ten minutes and assumes you have never done this before. Most people are moving in a straight line within five.
Into the first channels
You paddle out of the lagoon into wide, calm channels between the mangroves. The water is flat, the pace is easy, and the city noise stops almost immediately. Herons and egrets work the edges.
The narrow creeks
The route tightens into creeks barely two kayaks wide, roots arching out of the water on both sides. Your guide explains how this forest works — a nursery for the Gulf's fish and a carbon store the city is quietly proud of. Rays pass under the hulls on a good day.
The skyline reach and home
The trees open onto a final stretch with the towers of Reem and Maryah stacked on the horizon — the photograph everyone came for. Then a gentle paddle back, cold water on the shore, and the Carnival ride to your hotel.
Insider tips
- Ask for the late-afternoon slot if photography matters. The light goes gold through the mangroves in the last hour and the skyline stretch faces it.
- In a double kayak, put the stronger paddler in the back — that seat steers. It also prevents the classic marital argument at the first bend.
- Polarised sunglasses cut the surface glare and roughly double your chances of spotting rays before they spot you.
- Keep your phone in the dry bag until the narrow creeks. That is where the photographs are, and the wide channels will tempt you too early.
Questions, answered
Do I need kayaking experience?
None. The water is flat and sheltered, the kayaks are stable sit-on-tops, and the briefing covers everything. If you can sit and hold a paddle, you can do this.
Do I need to be able to swim?
You wear a buoyancy aid throughout and the channels are shallow and calm, but basic water confidence is required. Tell us at booking if anyone in your group is a non-swimmer and we will advise honestly whether it suits them.
Will I get wet?
A bit — expect drips from the paddle and wet feet at launch. Capsizes are rare on flat water but not impossible. Wear quick-dry clothing and bring a change for the drive back.
Can children join?
Yes, typically from around age six sharing a double kayak with an adult; older children can sometimes paddle solo at the guide's discretion. Give us ages at booking and we will set the boats up accordingly.
Will we definitely see rays and herons?
Herons and egrets, almost certainly. Rays, often. Guarantees, never — this is a national park, not an aquarium, and sightings depend on tide, season and luck. The forest itself is the constant.
What about the heat?
We run morning and late-afternoon slots and avoid the middle of the day. On the water there is usually a breeze, but sun protection matters — the reflection doubles it. Summer slots lean early.
