Wind-carved fossil dunes and the deep time of the Arabian plate, explained on location. This is a fully private experience in Abu Dhabi: your own vehicle, your own driver-guide, and an itinerary that flexes on the day.

One price covers the whole vehicle for up to 6 guests — bring the family and the price does not move. Allow about 5 hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

This is the version of the city you cannot see from a tour bus: rooms, tables and streets chosen by people who live here, sequenced so each stop makes the next one make sense.

Practicalities, handled: your driver's WhatsApp arrives the evening before with the exact pickup time; the vehicle carries chilled water and chargers; timings flex on the day if a flight, a nap or a whim demands it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before travel, and you can pay on the day.

Your day, stop by stop

  1. 15:00 · An afternoon start, on purpose

Pickup around three, because the fossil dunes are a light show and the late sun is the projector. Your guide starts the geology on the drive out — the Arabian plate, ancient shorelines, and why this desert was once a much wetter place.

  2. 16:00 · First contact

You step out among wind-carved ridges of cemented sand that look sculpted on commission. The first ten minutes are usually just walking and staring. That is allowed.

  3. 16:30 · How a dune turns to stone

Now the guide gets specific: carbonate-rich sand, ancient moisture cementing the grains, then millennia of wind stripping the soft and leaving the hard. The cross-bedding lines show you the ghost of the original dune. Deep time, explained standing on it.

  4. 17:30 · The far formations

A slow loop to the quieter shapes away from the entrance, where the shadows stretch and the crowds thin. This is where the photographs happen.

  5. 18:15 · Sunset among the shapes

The formations go gold, then pink, then silhouette. We stop talking geology and let the place do its thing.

  6. 18:45 · After dark, then home

The protected site typically has subtle pathway lighting, and the formations by lamplight are a different landscape again. Then back to the city, with the Carnival's air conditioning doing its best work of the day.

Insider tips

  • The last ninety minutes of daylight are the whole point — if anyone offers you a midday visit, decline politely.
  • Shoot low: crouching sets the formations against clean sky instead of flat desert, and the shapes double in drama.
  • Wind sculpted this place and the wind still shows up — sunglasses and a light layer save golden hour from being remembered for grit in your eyes.
  • Ask the guide to point out the cross-bedding lines before you start shooting; once you can read them, every frame gets more interesting.
  • Stay for the blue half-hour after sunset — most visitors leave at dusk, and the formations against a deepening sky are the best pictures of the day.

Questions, answered

Are there actual fossils — bones, shells?

Honest answer: 'fossil dunes' means the dunes themselves are fossilised — ancient sand cemented into rock — rather than a bone bed. What you are looking at is a preserved landscape tens of thousands of years in the making. Your guide will show you the evidence written into the rock.

Can we climb on the formations?

No — it is a protected area and the formations are fragile, so marked paths and walkways are the rule. The good news is they bring you within touching distance for photographs. Please help us keep both you and the geology intact.

How much walking is involved?

Around two to three kilometres in total, on sand and firm paths, in short unhurried loops with the vehicle never far. It is flat, but soft going in places. Closed shoes beat sandals.

Is this good for children?

Yes, surprisingly so — the shapes read as dragons and waves to a seven-year-old and as diagenesis to a geologist, and both leave happy. Keep small children hand-in-hand near the formations. Child seats are fitted on request.

What are the facilities like out there?

Basic — this is a protected desert site, not a visitor centre with a food court. We carry water in the Carnival and plan the comfort stops either side of the visit. Come fed, or tell us and we will build in a stop.

What about wind and sand for cameras?

Some evenings are still and perfect; on others the wind is gently sanding everything, your lens included. Bring a cover, keep the camera bagged between stops, and change lenses in the car. A phone copes fine either way.

What happens after you book

  1. You get a confirmation straight away, with the reference and everything included in writing.

  2. The evening before, your driver messages you on WhatsApp with the exact pickup time and their name.

  3. On the day they are early, the water is cold, and the plan bends to you. Pay then, or in advance — your call.
