The drive to the capital is ninety minutes of straight motorway, which is the best argument for doing it in your own car: you leave at half past eight, arrive before the heat, and walk into Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque while the marble courtyards are still cool. Two hours is enough to take it in properly: the colonnades, the reflecting pools and the prayer hall with its hand-knotted carpet. The dress code is strict, and your driver-guide briefs you on it before you arrive.
From the mosque you follow the Corniche to Emirates Palace for photographs, stop for lunch at Marina Mall or a traditional buffet, then choose the afternoon: Qasr Al Watan, the working Presidential Palace, or the Louvre Abu Dhabi under its floating dome. On the way home the route passes Yas Island for a quick stop beneath the red roof of Ferrari World.

Insider tips
- The mosque is at its best in the first hour after it opens, before the coach groups arrive and the marble heats up.
- Bring sunglasses: the white marble reflects a great deal of light, even in winter.

What should we wear for the mosque?
Shoulders and ankles covered for everyone, loose clothing, and a headscarf for women. Abayas can be borrowed at the mosque, but your own light scarf saves time at the entrance.
Qasr Al Watan or the Louvre?
Qasr Al Watan if the grand interiors and the story of the country appeal; the Louvre if you would rather spend the afternoon with art from every century. Both deserve the time the day gives them, and the Louvre is closed on Mondays.
What happens on a Friday?
The mosque closes to visitors around Friday midday prayers, so on a Friday the day is reordered: the palace or the museum in the morning and the mosque in the afternoon, when it reopens.
Which car should we choose?
The Kia Carnival seats seven and is the price you see first. A couple may prefer a saloon, a larger party a minibus or one of the coaches, which take up to thirty. Every car's price for this tour is listed on this page, and the price is for the whole vehicle, not per person.
