North of Sharjah the coast slows down. Ajman, the smallest of the seven emirates, keeps its eighteenth-century fort as a museum of the life that came before oil: pearling, fishing, the souk and the majlis, set out in rooms around the old courtyard. It is a good hour and a half, and rarely crowded.

The Corniche carries you on to Umm Al Quwain, where wooden dhows are still built by hand on the shore, and to a seaside lunch well away from the city noise. In the afternoon the lagoon behind the town opens up: mangroves along the shoreline and the low islands where seabirds nest in their thousands in season.
