The Al Wathba Fossil Dunes are sand dunes that hardened in place thousands of years ago and have since been carved by the wind into ridges, curls and overhangs that look more like sculpture than desert. They sit in a protected area on the edge of Abu Dhabi, and the light that suits them best is the low light of early morning, which is why you leave Dubai at six.
You have an hour and a half to walk among the formations on the marked paths, then a short drive to the Al Wathba salt lakes, whose shallow water and salt-white shores make photographs of a very different kind. You are back at your hotel before the heat of the day, with the afternoon free.
