Your day, stop by stop

Around 19:00 · Leaving the glow behind
We collect you in the evening and drive out past the last of the city's light. The first surprise of the tour is what forty-five minutes of distance does to a night sky. Your driver-guide handles the road; you watch the stars multiply through the window.
The dark-sky stop
Off the road, engine off, lights off. Your eyes take around twenty minutes to properly adjust to the dark, and the sky improves the entire time — faint stars appearing where there seemed to be none. The silence out here is part of the equipment.
Telescopes on the sand
The astronomer sets up and aligns the telescopes while you settle onto cushions. There is no queue and no coach party — the kit is yours for the evening. Questions are encouraged from the start.
A guided tour of the sky
Planets and the moon through the eyepiece, constellations traced overhead, and the stories behind them. Half the star names you know — Aldebaran, Altair, Deneb — are Arabic, coined by astronomers who worked under skies like this one. It is a good place to hear why.
Karak under the stars
Hot drinks on the sand, the unhurried questions, and the reliable crowd-pleaser: your phone held to the eyepiece for a shot of the moon's craters. The astronomer will line it up for you.

The drive home, with the city glow returning on the horizon. You are typically back at your hotel before midnight, having seen considerably further than most people do on holiday.

Insider tips

Book within a few nights of the new moon if the Milky Way is on your list. It is the single biggest factor in what you will see.
Switch your phone to its dimmest setting, or red-light mode if it has one. One flash of a bright screen undoes twenty minutes of dark adaptation for everyone.
Ask when booking which planets are visible that month, and choose your date accordingly. Saturn through a telescope is the sight people talk about for years.
Lie flat on the cushions for ten minutes and just watch. Meteors turn up more often than you would think — they simply refuse to do it while you are looking at a screen.
Winter means darkness falls early and the session sits at a civilised hour. Summer trades a warmer evening for a later start.

Questions, answered

Which nights are best for stargazing?

Around the new moon for the faint stuff — the Milky Way and deep-sky objects need real darkness. Around the full moon, the moon itself becomes the show through the telescope, which is no consolation prize. Tell us what you most want to see and we will help you pick the date.

What happens if it's cloudy?

Desert skies are clear most nights of the year, but not all of them. We watch the forecast and will contact you ahead of time to rearrange if conditions turn — we would rather move the evening than show you cloud through an expensive telescope.

Will it be cold?

In winter, genuinely — the desert sheds its heat fast after dark, and nights can sit fifteen degrees below the daytime figure. Bring a warmer layer than seems sensible when you leave the hotel. In summer the evenings are mild and the problem disappears.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes — curious kids tend to be the best audience the astronomer gets all week. The honest constraint is the late finish, so it suits children who can handle an 11pm return or nap in the car on the way home.

I wear glasses — can I still use the telescope?

Comfortably. You can view with glasses on or off, and the astronomer refocuses the eyepiece for each person. It takes seconds and nobody minds.

Can I photograph the night sky?

Serious star photography needs a tripod and long exposures, so bring one if that is your thing. Recent phones in night mode manage the brighter constellations surprisingly well. The reliable win is the moon shot through the eyepiece — your guide will set it up.

What happens after you book
