The dunes turned silver — a slow evening drive and dinner under moonlight (monthly dates). This is a fully private experience in Abu Dhabi: your own vehicle, your own driver-guide, and an itinerary that flexes on the day.

The desert works on its own clock: light that turns from white to gold in twenty minutes, dunes that change shape with the wind, and a silence you can hear. We time every departure around the light, not the schedule — and your driver knows which crest to stop on.

Pickup is set so you are on the sand before the moon comes up. This tour only exists a few nights a month, which is rather the point. Your driver-guide has checked the moonrise time to the minute; you just have to be in the lobby.
Sunset, the support act
The dunes go amber, then rose, then grey as the sun drops. Most desert tours end here. Yours is only warming up.
Moonrise over the ridge
The moon arrives huge and orange on the eastern horizon — an optical trick your eyes fall for every single time. Your guide will have you positioned on a crest facing the right way. It is the photograph of the evening, so take it now.
The silver drive
Where the sand begins, our permitted partner operator's 4x4 takes over for a slow, deliberate drift through dunes turned silver. This is the anti-dune-bashing: no engine theatrics, just moonlight doing things to the landscape that daylight never manages.
Dinner by moonlight
A quiet spot, a proper dinner, and light bright enough to eat by without a single bulb switched on. Full moonlight in the desert is startling — you can see your own shadow. Conversation tends to drop to a murmur out here, and nobody fights it.

The drive home, moon now high and white above the motorway. City lights will look slightly vulgar for the rest of the evening. That passes.

Insider tips

Book the exact full-moon night, or the night before it — those are the evenings the moon rises closest to sunset, which is what makes the timing work.
The moon looks its most enormous in the first ten minutes above the horizon. Be on the crest early; it does not wait.
Take your photographs at moonrise, then put the phone away. Your eyes handle moonlight far better than your sensor does, and the second half of the evening belongs to them.
Bring a light layer even in warmer months — the desert cools quickly once the sun is gone, and you will be sitting still at dinner.
The monthly calendar sells through fastest of any of our desert dates. Plan it a month out, not a week.

Questions, answered

Why does this tour only run on certain dates?

Because the full moon does. The experience is built around the few nights each month when the moon rises near sunset, full or a whisker off it. That fixed calendar means fixed capacity, so booking ahead matters more here than on our other desert tours.

What if the night turns cloudy or hazy?

Desert skies are usually kind, but we watch the forecast closely because the moon is the whole show. If conditions look poor we will contact you beforehand to discuss moving to the next month's dates. We would rather rearrange than serve you dinner under a duvet of cloud.

Is dinner included, and can you cater for dietary requirements?

The evening is built around dinner in the desert, yes. Tell us about allergies and dietary requirements when you book and we will arrange the menu accordingly. Vegetarians are well looked after in Emirati cooking.

Is alcohol served?

No — in the UAE alcohol is served only at licensed venues, and the open desert is not one. Dinner comes with juices, soft drinks and karak. If you want a nightcap afterwards, licensed venues in the city are a short drive from most hotels.

Is this a dune-bashing tour?

Deliberately not. The desert driving is slow and smooth because the point is the light, not the adrenaline. If you want the fast version, ask us about daytime desert tours where our partner operator provides the theatrics.

Will my photos come out at night?

Moonrise itself photographs beautifully on any recent phone — that is your moment, and your guide will position you for it. After dark, night mode handles the silver dunes better than you would expect. Your eyes will still beat the camera, which is the argument for putting it away at dinner.

What happens after you book
