Stand under a 300-metre wall of sand — one of the tallest dunes anywhere. This is a fully private experience in Liwa: your own vehicle, your own driver-guide, and an itinerary that flexes on the day.

One price covers the whole vehicle for up to 6 guests — bring the family and the price does not move. Allow about 12 hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

The desert works on its own clock: light that turns from white to gold in twenty minutes, dunes that change shape with the wind, and a silence you can hear. We time every departure around the light, not the schedule — and your driver knows which crest to stop on.

Practicalities, handled: your driver's WhatsApp arrives the evening before with the exact pickup time; the vehicle carries chilled water and chargers; timings flex on the day if a flight, a nap or a whim demands it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before travel, and you can pay on the day.

07:00 · The early road south
We collect you from your hotel in the Carnival and point it at the Empty Quarter. Liwa sits around two and a half hours south, and the drive is part of the story — city, then scrub, then nothing but sand in every direction. Your driver-guide fills the miles with how the Bani Yas came out of these oases and ended up running an emirate.
09:30 · The Liwa crescent
You arrive at the arc of oasis villages strung along the edge of the Rub' al Khali. Date plantations sit hard against dunes the colour of apricots. We stop, stretch, and let the scale of the place start to register.
10:30 · First sight of Moreeb
The tarmac runs all the way to the base, which does nothing to prepare you for what is at the end of it. Tal Moreeb — the name translates roughly as 'the terrifying dune' — rises around 300 metres, its slip face pitched close to 50 degrees. It is one of the tallest dunes anywhere on earth, and it looks it.
11:00 · Standing under the wall
You walk the base and, if you fancy it, attempt a stretch of the lower slope. Sand at that angle is honest work — most people climb a little, stop, and feel entirely justified. Your guide points out the hill-climb course that draws motorsport crowds here each winter.
12:30 · Lunch in the oasis
A proper break back in the Liwa crescent, out of the midday glare. This is a long day by design, so we pause properly rather than eating on the move. Your guide will have a plan for the stop.
14:00 · Dunes, farms and watchtowers
The afternoon is for the quieter Liwa — date farms, old watchtowers, and viewpoints where the dunes roll south into the largest sand desert in the world. This is the landscape most Abu Dhabi visitors never reach.
16:00 · The long golden drive home
We turn north as the light starts to drop, so the best of the dune colour comes to you through the window. You are typically back in Abu Dhabi by early evening, with several hundred photographs and a new definition of 'big'.

Insider tips

The dune's scale refuses to show up in photographs until there is a person in the frame. Walk fifty metres out, turn around, and shoot back towards the car — suddenly it works.
Winter weekends bring hill-climb crowds and engine noise to the base. Go midweek if you want the desert silent; go on an event weekend if you want the show.
The last twenty minutes of road to the dune are the best drive of the day. Put the phone down and watch it arrive.
Closed shoes over sandals — midday sand is hot enough to make the point firmly.
You are in one of the country's great date-growing oases, so buy dates here rather than at the airport. Small farm stalls often prefer cash.

Questions, answered

How much driving is involved?

A fair amount — Liwa is around two and a half to three hours each way, and the full day runs about twelve hours door to door. The Carnival is built for exactly this, and we plan stops so nobody arrives folded in half. Think of the drive as the opening act rather than the cost of entry.

Can we actually climb Moreeb Dune?

You can walk the base freely and attempt as much of the lower slope as your legs allow. Sand at that pitch is genuinely hard going, so most guests manage a satisfying stretch and stop there. No equipment needed — just water, closed shoes and realistic expectations.

Is dune bashing included?

This is a sightseeing day, not a thrill ride — the dune's base is reached by an ordinary sealed road. Any off-road desert driving is delivered by our permitted partner operator in proper 4x4 vehicles, so tell us at booking if you would like that added. Plenty of guests find the dune itself is quite enough drama.

Is it suitable for children or older travellers?

The viewing itself is easy — you can take in the dune from beside the car without walking on sand at all. The honest constraint is the length of the day, so it suits children who travel well and adults who don't mind an early start. Climbing is entirely optional.

When is the best time of year to go?

October to April, comfortably. Summer trips are possible but the heat in Liwa is serious, so we would keep you near the vehicle and out of the midday sun. Winter also brings the motorsport season to the dune, which is either a bonus or a reason to pick a quieter midweek date.

What are the facilities like out there?

Sparse — Liwa is genuinely remote, and services are basic and spread out. We plan the day around sensible stops for food and bathrooms, so you won't be caught out. Bring sunglasses and patience; we handle the rest.

What happens after you book
