Before the skyline there was the Creek, and this morning stays beside it. You start in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, a quarter of coral-stone houses and wind towers that cooled the city long before air conditioning, walked with your driver-guide at a pace that leaves time for the courtyards and the small museums tucked into them.
Then the crossing everyone remembers: an abra, the open wooden water taxi that has carried people across Dubai Creek for generations, over to Deira. The spice souk comes first, sacks of saffron, dried limes and frankincense, then the windows of the gold souk a few lanes on. The hour and a half here is yours: browse, bargain, or sit with a karak tea and watch the trade go by.

09:00 · Pickup and the drive to the Creek
Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel, chilled water waiting, for the half-hour drive to the historic Creek district on the Bur Dubai side.
09:30 · Al Fahidi on foot
An hour in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood: narrow lanes of coral-stone houses, the wind towers that cooled them, and small courtyards and museums to step into along the way.
10:30 · Across the Creek by abra
From the Bur Dubai station you cross Dubai Creek on an abra, the open wooden water taxi, with the dhows unloading along the far bank. The fare is a dirham or two, paid at the station.
11:00 · The spice and gold souks
An hour and a half of free time in Deira: the spice souk first, then the gold souk a few lanes on. Your driver-guide points out the better stalls and meets you at an agreed spot.
12:30 · Back to your hotel
The car collects you on the Deira side for the air-conditioned drive back, and you are at your hotel by one.
Insider tips
- Start early in the warmer months: Al Fahidi's lanes are shaded, but the souks are at their liveliest and coolest before noon.
- Carry a little cash for the abra and for small purchases; most gold shops take cards, many spice stalls do not.
- If you are buying gold, ask for the weight and the making charge separately, then compare two shops before you decide.

How much walking is there?
About an hour in Al Fahidi and as much or as little as you like in the souks, all on flat ground. Every stretch can be shortened, and the car is never far away.
Do we need to bargain in the souks?
In the spice souk, a little bargaining is expected; in the gold souk, gold is priced by weight at the day's rate plus a making charge, and it is the making charge that moves. Your driver-guide can tell you what is fair.
Can we change the order or add a stop?
Yes. It is your car and your day: the times above are a plan rather than a timetable, and your driver adjusts on the day within the hours you booked. Tell us in advance about anything that needs a reservation.
Which car should we choose?
